Santa Monica Parks: Our Neighborhood’s Best Kept Secrets

Living in Santa Monica, there are a number of things to do and people to see, which keep us occupied most of the time. Our city is ever-changing, giving us exciting new options to keep things fresh.  Santa Monica parks are one prime example of a great resource we have, that some people may not fully utilize.

Even though Santa Monica is where I work, live and play, I often forget, or just don’t know about, many of the city’s best attractions. What is mainstream to some could be a complete unknown to others.

One aspect of Santa Monica that I love is the city’s focus on parks and recreation. My guess is that most people come to Santa Monica for the beaches so they miss out on the wonderful open space within the city. Santa Monica does have some of the best beaches in Los Angeles, but why not change it up and spend a summer day at one of our local parks?

The list of Santa Monica parks is lengthy, but there are three that fly under the radar, in my opinion. The three parks that are my personal favorites:

  • Rustic Canyon Park – Located in Rustic Canyon, this park has a Santa Monica address but is technically property of the City of LA. Fully equipped with tennis courts, volleyball court, and a full size gymnasium with basketball court, this park is a perfect day trip for locals and their families. Not only does the park offer all of the great amenities, but it’s only a five minute drive to Will Rogers State Beach. Other amenities include barbecue pits, baseball diamond (unlighted), children’s play area, and picnic tables.
  • Douglas Park – A great little park on Wilshire and 25th Street, this park attracts all ages. This park offers tennis courts, a kids jungle gym, skate pad, tons of grassy space, and a complete lawn bowling section. I think they even have lawn bowling leagues that play there. In addition to all the amenities, the parking around the park is plentiful. This is one of the best family parks on the Westside.
  • Crescent Bay Park – It’s understandable why this park is rarely used. It’s right next to the beach! Most people park in the adjacent parking lot, and relax on the beach. Well, the next time you want to be by the ocean, but don’t want to get sandy, just pick a spot on the grass. This park offers a pergola with benches for parties, a gazebo, and a large grassy area. There is plenty of parking in the area.

So, the next time you’re in Santa Monica, take advantage of one of our local parks. Who knows, you may have it all to yourself!

What is your favorite park in Santa Monica? Do you ever frequent the parks I mentioned? Please leave any comments or questions below!
